A Summer Prayer
Long warm days...the pace of life slows.... a time for picnics and rest in shade.
Help me to rest awhile in the cooling shade of your presence.
Lord, Slow down my restless heart and fill me with gentle compassion for all people. Amen
“Christian prayer is not about appeasing an angry God. It is centred on a person, Jesus, and through him we are invited into a living and saving relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit that has consequences for how we live in this world and the next. In this relationship, nothing is wasted in our often complex lives. We are invited where we are, as we are, to grow and become even more. And when we feel distant from Jesus, guess who has moved away from whom? There is nothing that can ever, or ever will, stop God from loving us. It is never too late to make a return”
from Why Bother Praying by Richard Leonard S.J.

To be a real disciple is to put the spirit of Jesus before all else.
(A reflection on this Sunday’s Gospel) In today’s Gospel Jesus is explaining to us that we are called to be loyal resilient followers. This means we need to listen to Jesus when he explains to us what it takes to follow with all our hearts, minds and bodies. To love God is not a simple and easy thing. It takes years trying, years of refining our spirituality and always willing to live in the sunshine of the Gospel. There is no quick fix, nor is there a moment where we can say “That’s it I don’t have to try anymore” Following Jesus towards the kingdom of God is a worthy goal in our lives. However, we need to be aware of the kind of life journey this is and aware of our humanity as we journey together. For many, being a pilgrim follower of Jesus is what life is about. Always putting in the effort, some days more effort than others, but knowing nonetheless, that we are loved unconditionally and welcomed as wholeheartedly and lovingly as the prodigal son was. Jesus asks us to remind ourselves that we need to start with his love and then together, travel to a sense of faith, hope and love. Our Journey is not a journey alone, but one with and for each other.
