Third Sunday of Advent

"John the Baptist joins us in waiting for the One who is to come"
It was into a confused and conflictual situation, where anger and despair were smoldering, that a man called John appeared. He was a prophet. There had been no prophets in Israelfor many years; This made some people feel as if Israelhad been abandoned by God, thought others were still living in expectation, waiting and hoping for something to happen.John announced that 'another is to come'after him. This other was unknown to the leaders, unknown to the people, unknown even to him, John, until the Spirit of God, in the form of a dove, descended upon this other. This other was Jesus. He came and knelt humbly before Johnin the waters of the Jordan, asking to be baptised by Johnwho recognised him thenas the Son of God,the Messiah, the one who was to come, the one who for whom he was called to prepare the way.As he baptised JesusJohn heard a voice from heaven saying: 'This is my Son, my Beloved, in whom I am well pleased'.From then on John cried out:  'He must increaseand I must decrease'.
