Meath Diamond Jubilee Pilgrimage to Lourdes 12-17 September 2008It is 150 years ago since Our Lady appeared to St. Bernadette at the Grotto in Lourdes. Since that time people have travelled to this holy place in pilgrimage. It is a place of healing and a place of quiet prayer where all the brokenness of our lives can be offered to the Lord through the intercession of our Lady. This year, we are celebrating 60 years of our Diocesan Pilgrimage. A group of almost 1,400 will travel under the leadership of Bishop Smith who will the leading the pilgrimage for his 25th time as Bishop. This year the pilgrimage will have the unique privilege of being in Lourdes with Pope Benedict. Many of the pilgrims to Lourdes carry the cross of sickness and 220 of our pilgrims will stay in the Accueil Notre Dame Hospital. They will be cared for by a group of over 200 volunteer staff, Nurses, Brancardiers, Doctors, Handmaids & Chaplains. The pilgrims bring with them the hopes and prayers, the pains and joys from the people of the entire Diocese. At the end of the Pilgrimage a large candle will be left burning at the Grotto which gathers into one focus of light all our prayers. During the Pilgrimage all the people of our Diocese, whether at home or in Lourdes will be part of the great movement of prayer under the protection of Our Lady of Lourdes.
