Reflection for November - the month of the Holy Souls
Many of us are drawn to reflect on our own lives - what is important to us, what is important in itself - when someone belonging to us dies. This process of re-evaluation can be enriching and help us to adjust to new and challenging circumstances. Hearts that are broken need to be comforted but the Word of God presents the truth about the reality of life and death. Death is not a myth or a fantasy.
We pray today for the dead that their sins may be forgiven and that the all-embracing mystery of God's love and forgiveness will complete them in love for their heavenly destiny.
Julian of Norwich, the English mystic and Anchoress of the fourteenth century is noted for her supreme optimism about the ultimate destiny of humankind. One finds in her writings a graphic example of the hope that all men and women will be saved. She believed that somehow, in a mysterious way known only to God, the Blessed Trinity will perform a great deed at the end of time which will encompass all of creation in the enfolding love of God.
