“We must overcome all forms of racism, of intolerance and of the instrumentalization of the human person” – Tweet of Pope Francis of 18th July  @Pontifex

Please support this week’s Trocaire East African Hunger Crises Appeal.

“The field is the world, and the good seeds are the children of the Kingdom” (Mt:13:38)

A Special National Church collection will take place in all parishes at Masses this weekend 22nd/23rd July across all Irish dioceses in aid of 25 million people struggling to survive a devastating hunger crisis in East-Africa: Kenya, South Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia. With severe drought gripping many parts of east Africa, millions of people are facing starvation in the coming months.  The severity and scale of the crisis is unprecedented in recent decades.

The two worst affected countries in the region are Somalia and South Sudan but parts of Ethiopia and Kenya are also badly hit. Ongoing conflict in South Sudan and Somalia has displaced millions of people and severely disrupted the food system.

Trocaire has teams working in all four affected countries, bringing emergency food aid into the worst hit communities and helping people to survive the current crises. Trocaire will provide emergency food baskets to struggling families in the weeks and months to come, provide schools, health units and communities with water, while also distributing drought- tolerant seeds and tools for people to plant crops. Without these interventions, the cycle of hunger will simply continue and deepen.

Faith is a force that is greater

than knowledge or power or skill,

And the darkest defeat turns to triumph

if you trust in God’s wisdom and will,

For faith is a mover of mountains —

there’s nothing man cannot achieve

If he has the courage to try it

and then has the faith to believe.       by Helen Steiner Rice.
