Facts on the response of Catholic agencies to the Iraqi-Syrian
humanitarian crisis 2015-2016
The following facts were circulated at this week’s meeting of the Irish Bishops’ Conference

There are 44 Catholic aid agencies, 16 Dioceses and 13 Religious Institutes working in the crisis zone

These Catholic entities include 4,114 field staff and 8,334 volunteers

4.65 million people benefitted from the Catholic response in 2015 and 4.59 million beneficiaries so far this year

The Church mobilized US$ 207 million in 2015 and US$ 196 million so far this year

There are currently more than 13.5 million people in need of assistance in Syria and more than 10 million in Iraq. In Syria there are 8.7 internally displaced persons, and more than 3.4 million in Iraq, and there are 4.8 million Syrian refugees in all the area of the Middle East, especially in Turkey, Libya and Jordan.

The Irish Bishops reflected on the shocking upsurge in violence in the Syrian city of Aleppo and noted the debate which took place in Dáil Éireann concerning this human catastrophe.  Trócaire, the Bishops’ Conference overseas aid agency, is responding to the violence in Aleppo where the approximately 200,000 people living in the eastern half of the city have come under relentless attack.

The Bishops echoed the call of Pope Francis who has said, “I appeal to the consciences of those responsible for the bombing that they must give a reckoning to God.”  They discussed with great concern the high level of violence in Aleppo, in particular the deliberate targeting of civilian areas, including hospitals, where many people have been killed.

Bishops prayed for a political solution to this war and for all the people of Syria that their suffering will soon be at an end and they can begin to rebuild their country.

Sundowners is a short play about 4 residents of a nursing home. It appears to be a nice, quiet, well run home where all residents are safe & happy. But is this the case? Apparently, these residents take the law in to their own hands when a new client arrives with an annoying habit...October 14th & 15th Arch bar Dunshaughlin, 8pm. Tickets 086-2441973
