Ordination to Priesthood of Rev Robert McGivney

Rev Robert McGivney (28) will be ordained to the priesthood this Sunday, 28th June in St Mary’s Church, Navan by Bishop Smith. Robert is a native of Navan, Co. Meath, the son of Mr Gerry McGivney, a retired teacher and well-known local GAA Referee, and the late Mrs June McGivney.     Mrs June McGivney passed away in October 2014. He is the middle of two brothers, Joseph (30) and Shane (23).

After finishing his secondary education in St. Patrick’s Classical School, Navan, Robert completed a 4 year degree in Mathematics in Trinity College, Dublin. He began his seminary studies and formal discernment process in 2009 and has just qualified in his studies of Theology from St Patrick’s College, Maynooth.

During his studies, Robert took the opportunity to work with the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta in the summer 2012 which he described as a “life changing experience”. Along with that he has worked in parishes in the United States and undertook an intensive chaplaincy ministry course in Wisconsin in 2013. He was ordained a deacon last year in Maynooth College, and has assisted in many parishes of the diocese, particularly in Navan and Dunboyne.

Speaking on behalf of the Parish Pastoral Council, Mr Phil Cuffe said “It is a great testimony to our vibrant parish community in the way the parish of Navan has rallied around Robert in the preparations for the ordination”.

A large parish celebration of music, food and dance will take place to mark Robert celebrating his First Mass of Thanksgiving on Monday 29th June at 7pm in St. Mary’s Church.

Ronald Rolheiser has a lovely way of using the story in today’s gospel of a woman touching the hem of Christ’s garment to encourage parents whose children no longer practise the faith or who find themselves estranged from the Church. He stresses that what each of us does for others (as the Body of Christ, his church an in Christ’s name), is an extension of Christ’s ministry. When we forgive someone, we communicate Christ’s forgiveness; when we comfort someone, we extend Christ’s comfort to them. When parents continue to love, care for, comfort, listen to, and forgive their adult children, these family members, although no longer practising are nevertheless touching them with Christ’s garment.

“The first gift of the Holy Spirit is Wisdom. But it is not simply human wisdom, which is the fruit of knowledge and experience. Wisdom is the grace of being able to see everything with the eyes of God”                                                                    Pope Francis,  April 2014
