Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes. (12-17 Sept) “Lourdes, a door to faith” is the pastoral theme for our pilgrimage to Lourdes this year. On Thursday 12thSeptember over 800 pilgrims from our Diocese will travel to Lourdes, among them are many of our elderly and sick and over 200 volunteer helpers. These are important days for our entire diocese when we unite in prayer and bring our needs and thanksgivings to the altar of the Lord through the intercession of our Lady. This is also a time to acknowledge with gratitude the generosity of so many people in our diocese who make this pilgrimage possible.

"War, never again" pleads Pope Francis

“Violence never leads to peace, war leads to war, violence leads to violence,” Pope Francis warned in Rome on Sunday. Appealing for an end to the conflict in Syria and calling for peace, the Pope addressed St Peter’s Square which was packed with pilgrims gathered for the weekly Angelus blessing and expressed the hope, “May the cry for peace enter the hearts of everyone.”

He said “I condemn with particular force the use of chemical weapons. I still have in my mind and heart the terrible images of the past days.” And he added, “There is judgment from God and history on our actions that no one can escape.” He urged the international community to make “every effort” to get a process of dialogue going in Syria and exhorted, “War, never again.”

“My heart is profoundly wounded in these days by what is happening in Syria and I am anxious about the prospect of dramatic developments,” the Pope said on Sunday. He expressed the hope that “a chain of commitment for peace will unite all women and men of good will”.                “With all my strength, I call on the warring parties to listen to the voice of their own consciences, not to close themselves in their own interests but to look on the other as a brother,” he said.

On Saturday, Pope Francis met top Vatican officials to discuss the situation in Syria.  Christian minorities in Syria are concerned about the rise of radical Islam there and point to the Assad regime’s past record as a guarantor of religious diversity.  They are also concerned that Syria may go the way of Iraq, where there has been a massive exodus of Christians due to the threat of violence and discrimination they face.

Bishop Smith has sent his prayerful good wishes to Fr. Robert McCabe, who departs this month as chaplain to the 114 men and women in the 43rd Infantry group. They will be deployed to the Golan Heights and the heavily militarised border crossing with Syria. *********************************************************************************************Ratoath Community Centre and Active Age Annual Get-together in September.
