                       Trocaire’s Lenten Campaign

Ar scath a cheile a mhaireann na daoine (By coming together, people live)

The focus of this year’s campaign is Honduras. At present Honduras is the third poorest country in Central America and the Caribbean after Nicaragua and Haiti. Trocaire has been active in Honduras since 1970’s, opening a regional office in the capital, Tegucigalpa, in 1994. Their work is supporting the people to gain access to land. Another important part of Trocaire’s overall work in Honduras is advocating for justice and influencing changes in public policy to favour the poor.

Standard of Living: 65.4% of the population are living below the poverty line.
Malnutrition: Chronic malnutrition affects 25% of children under 5 years.
Access to Land: 80% of rural families are unable to provide sufficient food for themselves due to lack of access to land.
Health: 18% of the population have no access to healthcare services.

“But it is not God’s will for some to have everything and others to have nothing. That cannot be of God. God’s will is that all his children be happy.”                                    Archbishop Oscar Romero

“We should love not only with words, but concretely, with facts, and we should love one another. My dear children, if you do this, if we all do this, universal brotherhood will spread, solidarity will blossom, good will be distributed more justly, and the rainbow of peace will shine over the world which, in a few years, will be in your hands”                                           Chiara Lubich

“ When we learn to see life through the eyes of a child – that is when we become truly wise”
                                                                                            Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta
