Third Sunday in Lent: Water welling up to eternal life

‘Thirst’ is something everybody experiences. Water quenches and satisfies physical thirst. The soul can suffer thirst too and our relationships with God and our neighbour can become dry and meaningless. A strange irony exists in our world: people in one part of the world suffer drought and famine, they are spiritually alive, conscious of their neighbour, dependent and grateful to God; they do not turn their backs on the Creator. In another part of the world, those who want for nothing in material terms live with a spiritual drought; the Creator is made redundant; manufactured goods, technology and comfort eating fill the emptiness. Let this Eucharist unite us in our endeavours to relieve the thirsts of the world.
