The Year of St. Paul

28th June 2008- 29th June 2009 to mark the bimillennium of his birth

Pope Benedict XVI has expressed the hope that the Pauline year will intensify ecumenical efforts and deepen the Church’s understanding of the life and teaching of the Apostle. He hopes, too, that it will become a catalyst, especially for the people of Europe, to re-discover the values inherited from the wisdom of Hellenistic culture and the gospel of which Paul was a unique representative.Paul’s lasting contribution to Christian theology was the crafting of a language in which to speak of God that drew on the rich repository of Jewish biblical tradition and language of Greek philosophy and culture.Paul wrestled with the intricacies of God’s purpose in history, his self revelation in his Son, and above all the implications of Christ’s death and resurrection for the everyday life of the believer. If he is ignored and abused today, he would not be surprised! He suffered far worse in his own day. But he surely deserves to be accorded the status that he would never have claimed, and recognised as the greatest and the most influential of all Christian theologians.
