28th Sunday in Ordinary time

Day of Prayer for Emigrants

Lord, our help and guide,

make your love the foundation of our lives.

May our love for you express itself

in our eagerness to do good for others.

Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?

Not long ago I passed a homeless man standing on a street corner, talking to himself. I wondered about his life story and what sustained him interiorly. The gospel story today is also about strangers. Did Jesus question who the ten lepers were when they cried out to be healed? He seems not to have been concerned about their personal history, religion or ethnicity but immediately heals them as they go on their way.

Jesus does care about the foreigner who returns to give thanks, and Jesus commends the stranger  for his faith. As with the leper, or the homeless person on a street corner, we do not know what stirs within the stranger’s heart. What we do know is that there is still far too much bias, prejudice, false judgement and intolerance in our world. This gospel story leads us to ask : Am I open and welcoming to those who are different from myself? Am I willing to receive them without judgement as Jesus received the ten lepers and be a source of loving presence of them?

Next Sunday is Mission Sunday. Christians are invited to support the work of missionaries as they reflect God’s love on the five continents. People are asked to give generously to the Propagation of the Faith collection which will be sent in its entirety to a young Church.
